We were in midtown back before they had deemed it safe you know in the cass corridor our folks called it a dangerous place I can picture his face right now smiling through crooked teeth he had his flashlight in our eyes on that dimly lit side street most of my heart is beating to the sound of nostalgic nights in an empty downtown under flickering lights we watched this city breathe in and out sitting on a curb I looked down and read East Jordan Iron Works god knows what we were up to but we’d done it a million times someone else better drive we’ll follow Woodward up to the city lines before I can let it go I’ll have a laugh thinking about my friends man we were so in it back then memorizing maps and where the sidewalks crack overthinking again most of my heart is beating to the sound of nostalgic nights in an empty downtown under flickering lights we watched this city breathe in and out sitting on a curb I looked down and read East Jordan Iron Works checked the rear view he shut off the red and blues the scene went dark on Alexandrine Avenue mighta went different silver spoon suburban luck if I were born again I wonder where I might end up
